Tom Godfrey, core model team member at Aerogility

Tom is a new addition to our core model team as of June 2024. He brings his expertise in agent-based modelling and creating flexible simulation interfaces which he’d previously been applying to support hospital care. Tom is working directly with customers helping to translate their requirements into improved software design and implementation.

Tom, what made you want to join Aerogility? Is it what you expected?

My PhD topic was all about engaging with users in developing digital twin models, and I was very keen to apply my research in a new setting. Aeralis works with some very interesting domains and customers, and I was excited to find a role that aligns so well with my expertise. I’m glad to say that the role is exactly what I have been looking for!

What would you say is the most rewarding aspect of your role at Aerogility?

I really appreciate the ability to divide my time between working directly with the customer — establishing their challenges and where Aerogility can help — and spending time in the technical side of implementing solutions to those challenges.

What impact have you seen of Aerogility’s software on the way aviation businesses save money, improve yield, save carbon and so on?

I think an under-appreciated benefit is the learning potential that can be found in the process of implementing models in Aerogility. The domain-specific language that Aerogility uses makes it very accessible, so we can develop models directly with clients. In so doing, we’re required to collaboratively analyse the customer’s business processes — and that can often find challenges or areas for improvement, even before executing models. We can then simulate different scenarios within Aerogility to investigate potential improvements and solutions to those challenges.

Any unexpected challenges you’ve had to overcome?

Not necessarily unexpected, but maybe I underestimated the difficulty of starting a new job whilst finishing my thesis. I am very glad to have that behind me now!

What are you working on now?

I am currently working with one of our latest clients, Aeralis, who have a fascinating, novel approach to aircraft design and supply. We are working with Aeralis to support the planning of their first fleet roll-out.

What do you enjoy outside of Aerogility?

Seemingly like many Londoners in their 20s, I started climbing in the last few years. I started with bouldering, but have since learned sport and trad with my local climbing club. At home, I can be found listening to music, cooking, researching my next hobby fad, or filling any last remaining space in our flat with new board games.
