Meet the team: Hannah Hukins
Hannah Hukins, software developer at Aerogility
Hannah joined Aerogility in September 2023. She had previously worked with other members of the team in another company, but left to become a piano teacher before deciding to return to software development. She is a valued member of the core development team and works on new product feature development in addition to day-to-day customer support and maintenance work.
Hannah, what made you want to join Aerogility? Is it what you expected?
I previously worked with John Fussell, Jo Thomas and Malcolm Bridgeford on insurance software systems before taking an extended career break, during which I taught the piano. After 11 years, I decided to dive back into IT as a trainee developer at Aerogility. It has been a steep learning curve, but I am enjoying it immensely and have learnt huge amounts in a short space of time. Jo is a very close friend of mine too, so it has been great fun having her mentor me.
What would you say is the most rewarding aspect of your role at Aerogility?
My inner nerd is absolutely thrilled to be coding again! It was a hugely daunting prospect returning to IT after so many years, so it’s rewarding to know I’m making meaningful contributions to the team.
What impact have you seen of Aerogility’s software on the way aviation businesses save money, improve yield, save carbon and so on?
Just this week, I have been working on a client scenario that has more than 300,000 agents — it would be an impossible task to manage that number of planning variables without Aerogility software.
Have there been any unexpected challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been many challenges — getting to grips with the languages, the development lifecycle and learning about the Aerogility product itself. However, the biggest challenge for me has been a personal one, in developing confidence in my own ability.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on a method for anonymising secure data. A number of our customers have data that is confidential and must not leave their secure systems. To enable Aerogility developers to look at issues that use such data, we disguise (or anonymise) some of the data so that we can upload it to our computers.
What do you enjoy outside of Aerogility?
My main hobby is music. I sing in a barbershop choir, play the cello in the Sevenoaks Symphony Orchestra, and my piano is next to my desk for whenever I need a break from programming. I also love long walks with my beautiful dog, Daisy — and I have two teenage daughters to keep me busy.
