Kiem joined Aerogility in February 2023 and is a valuable member of the core agent-based modelling team. Apart from his general AI development skills, Kiem brings expertise in design and visualisation, allowing us to improve the accessibility and ease of use of our software. He works across a range of customer projects from modelling supply chains to defence aerospace operations.

Kiem, what made you want to join Aerogility? Is it what you expected?

I was keen to join a small company with a team of close-knit individuals to work together and solve complex problems. Aerogility fits that description perfectly. It is my second role after graduating and aligns very closely with what I had worked on during my third and fourth year at university, both of which were on agent-based models.

What would you say is the most rewarding aspect of your role at Aerogility?

Being able to solve complex problems is extremely rewarding to me because it gives you a great sense of accomplishment and motivates you for the next hurdle. As a software engineer, there is also a great variety of issues to address, from back-end agent-model challenges to more visual and design-oriented tasks on the front-end. You never get bored and are constantly on your toes.

What impact have you seen of Aerogility’s software on the way aviation businesses save money, improve yield, save carbon and so on?

It is extremely eye-opening to see the speed at which you can plan and schedule assets and maintenance using the Aerogility software, compared to the traditional labor-intensive method of using spreadsheets. Also, the fact that you can utilise Aerogility for a wide range of problem domains instils me with great confidence that its capabilities can be expanded to new and emerging sectors.

Any unexpected challenges you’ve had to overcome?

When first joining Aerogility, I expected to get stuck in on all sorts of programming challenges. However, I had to work on a non-programming challenge very shortly after joining, presenting a demo I had worked on for only a short while, to the whole company. I was very nervous at the prospect, however I managed to pull off a great presentation!

What are you working on now?

Currently, my main skillset is creating visualisation demos of varying scenarios in a way that is attractive, as well as being easy enough to understand and extract useful information from. It is very satisfying to see it all come together at the end and watch your creation come to life.

What do you enjoy outside of Aerogility?

I am a big gamer at heart and like to consider myself pretty proficient at competitive games. I also enjoy creating my own indie game in my spare time, because it perfectly combines my creative side and love for video games. When I am not gaming or creating games, I immerse myself in books, fiction and non-fiction — my current obsession is the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov, which I highly recommend.

Aside from that, I also believe in the importance of keeping fit, so I regularly work out at the gym and enjoy travelling abroad where there is a lot of walking, hiking and sightseeing.
